Ugandan entertainment journalist and television presenter Brian Makona Ssemanda, widely known as Makona and a familiar face on NBS TV and Sanyuka TV under Next Media, is now fighting for his life after a devastating road crash in the early hours of August 7, 2026.
The crash reportedly happened at about 2.00 a.m. near the Stabex area in Namulanda along Entebbe Road when the vehicle carrying Makona and two colleagues collided with another vehicle. Uganda Police confirmed that the accident involved a Toyota Allex and a Toyota Hilux. Sadly, producer Badru Kasirye and content creator Isaac Ndamagye lost their lives at the scene, while Makona sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Kisubi Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Some reports later indicated he could be transferred to Case Clinic for further treatment.
Sometimes life reminds everyone that the journey home deserves as much prayer as the journey out.
Before the tragic accident, Makona, Kasirye and Ndamagye had attended a celebrity boxing event featuring Chicken Chicken and Shawa at Supremacy Lounge in Nakulabye. What was meant to be another exciting assignment covering entertainment suddenly turned into a heartbreaking story that nobody expected them to become part of.
Following confirmation of the crash, Next Media joined several Ugandan media organisations in mourning the deaths of Kasirye and Ndamagye while appealing to the public to keep Makona and the affected families in their prayers as he continues receiving medical care. Messages of condolence, sympathy and hope for his recovery have continued pouring in across Uganda, with fellow journalists, entertainers, fans and public figures expressing shock over the tragedy.
The incident has once again reopened conversations about road safety, particularly during late night travel after public events. It also serves as another painful reminder that behind every smiling television face is a family waiting for them to return home safely after work.
As Uganda mourns two promising media professionals and prays for Makona's recovery, one uncomfortable truth refuses to disappear. The cameras may stop recording when an event ends, but sadly the road sometimes insists on writing its own final script.
