Nigeria has gas everywhere, yet somehow the country can still watch valuable gas go up in flames while millions of Nigerians struggle with expensive energy.
President Bola Tinubu is now telling NLNG that burning wealth into the atmosphere is probably not the best business strategy. 😂
Speaking at the State House on August 26, Tinubu urged the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) to intensify efforts to stop gas flaring and turn what is currently an environmental problem into something that benefits Nigerians economically, especially through greater domestic use.
The President said NLNG should look beyond international markets and help make Nigeria’s gas resources more useful and accessible at home. He also said the government would consider incentives to support expansion and better pricing for ordinary consumers.
And the numbers show just how valuable the industry is.
NLNG says it has generated more than $150 billion since inception, with about $47 billion paid in dividends to shareholders, including the Nigerian government, which owns 49% of the company.
The company had previously operated only four of its six trains because of inadequate crude supply. Increased production has now allowed five trains to operate, while Train 7 is being prepared for inauguration and is expected to increase capacity by another 35%.
NLNG also says all its LPG, or cooking gas, currently goes to the domestic market.
With Nigeria sitting on vast gas reserves, Tinubu’s message is pretty simple:
Stop watching potential wealth disappear into the sky and start making the gas work for the people below. 🇳🇬
Because Nigerians have seen enough flames. They would rather see affordable energy. 🔥➡️💡
