Nigerian Man Jailed in Scotland After Ex Wife Survives Brutal Attack

 

A failed relationship is painful enough, but turning heartbreak into violence only leaves more victims behind. Sadly, another disturbing case has ended with justice catching up to a Nigerian man whose actions almost cost his former wife her life in the United Kingdom. In the end, anger achieved nothing except years behind bars and a child left with memories no child should ever carry.

A 26 year old Nigerian man identified as Osarenkhoe Atutie has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after admitting to the attempted murder of his estranged wife in Edinburgh, Scotland. The sentence was handed down at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, after he previously pleaded guilty to the offence.

The attack happened on November 11, 2025, along Duke Street in Leith. Court proceedings revealed that Atutie first hugged their young daughter before launching a brutal knife attack on his former wife, Victory Atutie, in full view of the child. The High Court heard that the 30 year old woman suffered twelve separate injuries, including severe facial wounds that left permanent scars and a collapsed lung. The presiding judge, Lord Cubie, described the incident as a sustained attack on a defenceless victim and noted that she survived only because of sheer luck and the courageous intervention of members of the public who rushed to help.

The court also heard that the couple got married in Nigeria about four years before the attack and later relocated to London, where their daughter was born. However, after the marriage broke down, Victory moved with the child to Edinburgh in an effort to begin a new chapter. Investigators established that Atutie tracked down their location before carrying out the attack, a move the court considered evidence that the assault involved planning and deliberate intent rather than a spontaneous act of anger.

While delivering judgment, Lord Cubie stated that the victim could easily have lost her life and emphasised that only fortune and the swift response of passers by prevented the case from becoming a murder trial. Alongside the prison sentence, the court imposed a lifetime order banning Atutie from contacting his former wife in any way.

The case has once again sparked conversations about domestic violence and the importance of protecting victims who choose to leave abusive relationships. It also serves as another reminder that ending a relationship is never a crime, but attempting to end someone's life certainly is. In the end, the person who refused to let go has now been forced to spend years learning that prison walls are far less forgiving than a broken heart.
