MYSTERY CAR BLAST KILLS RUSSIAN MILITARY OFFICER IN ST PETERSBURG

 St Petersburg has been hit by another unsettling mystery, after a car carrying a Russian military lieutenant colonel and his wife exploded near a supermarket in the Shushary and Slavyanka area on Thursday morning.

The officer reportedly died at the scene, while his wife suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. Russian investigators have opened a criminal case as they work to establish what caused the deadly incident.

Initial Russian media reports raised the possibility that an improvised explosive device may have detonated inside the vehicle. However, authorities have not confirmed that an explosive was involved, with the Investigative Committee so far describing the incident as a vehicle fire.

The explosion is attracting attention because Russian military personnel have previously been targeted in vehicle blasts since the war in Ukraine began.

But for now, there is no public evidence confirming this was an assassination or that Ukraine was involved, and Kyiv has not claimed responsibility.

Investigators therefore face a difficult question: was this a tragic accident, an explosive attack or something deliberately planted inside the vehicle?

For now, the officer is dead, his wife remains seriously injured and the cause remains unclear.
