Lightning Strike Kills 24-Year-Old Footballer During Semi-Final Match In Thailand

What was meant to be a routine football match turned into a moment of shock, panic, and tragedy in just a flash.

A 24 year old Thai footballer, Sofwan Awae, has died after lightning struck the pitch during a live match in southern Thailand. The heartbreaking incident happened on Tuesday during a Golok FA Cup semifinal at Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok, as heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across the area.

Eyewitness footage now circulating online shows just how sudden it was. A bright flash cut through the sky, followed by a loud explosion. Within seconds, players began collapsing on the field.

Sofwan, who played as a winger, was among those hit.

Emergency responders rushed onto the pitch and tried desperately to revive him before he was taken to the hospital. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead.

He had only just signed for Thai third tier side Yala FC days before this tragic moment.

Twelve other people were also injured in the strike and taken to Sungai Golok Hospital for treatment. Among them was 22 year old Malaysian player Mohammad Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli. Teammates, officials, and even spectators were seen rushing in to help as chaos unfolded.

As the shock settles, questions are already being asked.

Why did the match continue despite clear signs of a thunderstorm?

Safety experts have long warned that once thunder is heard or lightning is seen, outdoor sporting activities should be stopped immediately. Players and fans are expected to leave open spaces and seek shelter in buildings or vehicles.

This is not the first time something like this has happened.

In November 2024, a similar tragedy occurred in Peru, where a 39 year old footballer lost his life after lightning struck during an amateur match.

Now, Sofwan Awae’s death has reignited concerns about safety protocols in football, especially in regions prone to extreme weather.

Because sometimes, it only takes one second for everything to change.

And this time, it cost a young player his life.
