ISRAEL COURT ACQUITS SETTLER WHO KICKED FRENCH NUN IN THE HEAD

 

A French Catholic nun was pushed to the ground and kicked in the head in Jerusalem, but the court case has ended with the accused walking free.

Yona Schreiber, a 48 year old settler from Peduel in the occupied West Bank, was acquitted by the Jerusalem Magistrate Court after the court ruled that he was not responsible for the assault because of mental illness.

The nun, who works as a researcher at Jerusalem’s French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, was attacked outside the Cenacle on Mount Zion in April and required medical treatment following the incident.

Schreiber reportedly pushed her to the ground before kicking her in the head. His lawyer, Idan Gamliel, described the incident as unfortunate while acknowledging the difficult feelings experienced by the victim.

The ruling has understandably attracted attention, particularly because the assault happened at one of Jerusalem’s important religious sites and involved a Catholic nun.

The legal matter may now be settled, but the controversy surrounding the incident is unlikely to disappear so easily.

Because after someone is pushed to the ground and kicked in the head, an acquittal may close a courtroom file, but it does not necessarily erase what happened to the person on the ground.

Justice may have delivered its verdict, but the victim is still left carrying the memory. 💔
