Nigeria Court Sends 19-Year-Old Bride To The Gallows

 

Nine days. That was all this marriage lasted before it ended in a courtroom verdict that no family ever imagines. 

In Nigeria, a Kano State High Court has sentenced 19-year-old Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging after finding her guilty of killing her 30-year-old husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding. It is one of those cases that leaves everyone asking how a union that had barely begun ended in such a devastating tragedy. 

The court ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, while Justice Maryam Sabo informed the convicted woman that she has 90 days to challenge the judgment on appeal. Sometimes the honeymoon barely starts before reality writes the darkest chapter.

According to the court, the incident happened on May 5, 2025, in Farawa Quarters, Kano, where prosecutors said Saudat allegedly laced her husband's Zoho drink before slashing his throat with a knife at about 9 p.m. Two witnesses testified for the prosecution, while she denied committing the offence throughout the trial. Her lawyer appealed for mercy, telling the court she had transformed while in custody by memorising the Holy Qur'an and also asking the judge to consider that she is the eldest child whose younger siblings depend on her. 

The plea, however, did not change the verdict, as the court upheld the charge of culpable homicide under Section 221(a) of the Penal Code. It is another painful reminder that when violence replaces communication, everybody loses long before any judge delivers a sentence.
