Five common supplements can cause deadly heart attacks and liver failure:
1. Vitamin E (High Doses)
Risk: High doses (above 400 IU/day) have been linked to an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke and heart failure, particularly in people with existing heart disease. Why: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant, and in excess, it can interfere with blood clotting and increase bleeding risk, potentially leading to heart complications.
Risk: Concentrated green tea extract (especially in weight loss products) can cause liver toxicity, inflammation, and even acute liver failure. Why: The polyphenols in green tea are healthy in normal amounts, but in extract form and high concentrations, they can overwhelm the liver’s detox system.
3. Calcium with Vitamin D Risk: Excessive calcium supplementation, particularly in older adults, can lead to artery calcification, kidney stones, and increased risk of heart attacks. Why: High calcium levels can stiffen arteries and reduce their flexibility, raising cardiovascular risk.
4. Niacin (Vitamin B3) Risk: In high doses (often used for cholesterol management), niacin can cause liver damage, stomach ulcers, irregular heartbeat, and even heart failure. Why: The liver must metabolize niacin, and sustained high intake can strain or injure it severely.
5. Red Yeast Rice Risk: Contains monacolin K, a compound identical to the prescription statin drug lovastatin, which can cause muscle damage, liver toxicity, and heart rhythm issues. Why: Since it acts like a statin, combining it with other medications or taking unregulated doses can pose serious health dangers.
