A murder inquiry is underway following the tragic death of Dr Fortune Gomo, a 39-year-old scientist who was found seriously injured on South Road in Dundee. The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, and Dr Gomo was pronounced dead at the scene. A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with her death and is expected to appear in Dundee Sheriff Court. Dr Gomo, originally from Zimbabwe, was a respected professional who had recently started a role with Scottish Water as a senior service planner. She previously studied and worked at the University of Dundee as a PhD student and postdoctoral research assistant in geography. Her former colleagues and university leadership expressed shock and sadness at the news. Interim Principal Professor Nigel Seaton described her death as a devastating loss for both the university and the wider community, especially its close-knit African student and staff network. Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that the death is being treated as murder following a post-mortem examination. He stated that there is no wider threat to the public and that multiple lines of inquiry are being pursued. He also urged the public not to speculate online about the incident and encouraged anyone with information to contact the police. A visibly increased police presence will remain in the area as investigations continue. Support services are being made available for students affected by Dr Gomo’s death, with the university’s Chaplaincy Centre opening for those in need. Tributes have poured in, including from friends like Angela Machonesa, who remembered Dr Gomo as both intellectually gifted and emotionally wise. Her community mourns her deeply, emphasizing that her life and legacy must never be forgotten.
