University of Ghana Halts All Social Gatherings as COVID-19 Cases Surge on Campus

The University of Ghana in Legon has become a focal point of national concern after announcing an immediate suspension of all social gatherings on its campus, effective June 26, 2025, at 9:16 AM WAT. The decision comes in response to a troubling resurgence of COVID-19 cases among students, faculty, and staff, signaling a renewed challenge in managing the pandemic within the academic community. The university’s administration cited the need to prioritize public health and prevent further spread of the virus, particularly in densely populated campus settings where social events could exacerbate transmission.

The comprehensive ban affects all student organizations, including the Student Representative Council (SRC), the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and various departmental and faculty-based associations. This suspension disrupts a wide range of planned activities, such as student union events, cultural programs, and academic society gatherings, which are integral to campus life. The university has not specified a timeline for lifting the ban, stating that it will remain in place until the situation is deemed safe based on health assessments and guidance from national health authorities.

The resurgence of COVID-19 cases has raised alarms about the potential for broader community spread, prompting calls for increased testing and vaccination efforts on campus. The University of Ghana’s swift action reflects its commitment to safeguarding its community, but it has also sparked discussions about balancing academic life with health precautions in Ghana’s evolving pandemic landscape.
