Bamboo has sparked widespread discussion in Nigeria, with citizens voicing strong sentiments of disbelief, skepticism, and outright disgust on social media platforms in response to the Federal Government’s announcement to build affordable housing using bamboo. The initiative, aimed at addressing the country’s housing deficit, has stirred controversy due to perceptions about bamboo’s suitability for modern construction and the government’s choice of material.
The government outlined its plan to construct durable, eco-friendly "smart" houses for low and medium-income earners across Nigeria, emphasizing bamboo’s potential as a sustainable and cost-effective building material. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide affordable housing solutions while promoting environmentally conscious construction practices.
The proposal was unveiled by Esuabana Asanye, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, during a Capacity Building Workshop in Abuja on Wednesday, June 11. The workshop, focused on the relevance of bamboo for climate-smart housing construction, highlighted the material’s strength, sustainability, and adaptability for innovative housing projects. Despite the government’s enthusiasm, the announcement has met with significant public backlash, with many Nigerians questioning the practicality and durability of bamboo homes in the context of the country’s housing needs.
