Host cities hope that World Cup spectacle will elevate popularity of 'soccer' in US
With one year remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, US host cities are preparing for what could be a turning point in the growth of soccer in America. The tournament, which will be co-hosted with Mexico and Canada, is set to be the largest in FIFA history. Soccer supporters and organizers hope the event will inspire a new generation of fans and elevate the sport’s standing in a country long dominated by American football, basketball, baseball, and hockey.
The transformation since the United States last hosted the tournament in 1994 is striking. At that time, Major League Soccer did not exist and interest in soccer was limited. Now, the sport has established a growing professional presence and improved infrastructure. Former US national team player Eddie Pope recalls early days in MLS when facilities were limited and uncertain. Today, as a leader at Carolina Core FC, he is part of building advanced training facilities that may serve as base camps during the World Cup.
Atlanta, one of 11 US cities chosen to host matches, is emerging as a soccer hub. It will open the US Soccer Federation’s first ever national training center in April and host eight World Cup matches, including a semifinal. The city expects an economic boost of around 500 million dollars.
Tim Zulawski of AMB Sports and Entertainment notes that beyond money and logistics, what matters most is the cultural shift young players now have professional idols and a path to the top. While challenges remain for the US men's team under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, the hope is that 2026 will mark a new era for the beautiful game in America.
