Dalai Lama set to reveal succession plan as China watches

As the 14th Dalai Lama nears his 90th birthday, Tibetan communities and global followers are preparing for a pivotal announcement about his successor. This week, he will address a major three-day conference of Tibetan Buddhist leaders, the first since 2019. It is widely expected that he may reveal a framework for how his reincarnation will be determinedan issue that has drawn sharp scrutiny from China. The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, has long insisted that his successor will be born outside of China and has urged followers to reject any successor selected by Beijing. China, however, maintains it has the authority to appoint the next Dalai Lama, aiming to keep the succession under its control for political purposes. This has raised fears among Tibetans that China could attempt to install a puppet figure to manipulate Tibetan Buddhism. Thupten Ngodup, Tibet’s chief state oracle, emphasized that discussions on reincarnation usually don’t occur while a monk is alive, but the situation has changed due to China’s growing interference. Dolma Tsering Teykhang, deputy speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, highlighted the urgency of the Dalai Lama himself addressing the issue directly, stating that the Chinese government is trying to seize control of a sacred tradition. The Dalai Lama’s message will likely reinforce his position that the decision on his reincarnation must remain spiritual and free of external influence. Observers say this is a historic moment for preserving Tibetan culture and ensuring the continuity of genuine leadership rooted in Buddhist values.

Celebrations for the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday will begin this week, following the spiritual leader’s expected message on succession. The Tibetan government in exile has organized special prayers, and the Dalai Lama will attend and speak at events on July 5 and July 6. Hollywood actor Richard Gere, a longtime follower of Tibetan Buddhism, will also be present, alongside Indian ministers including Kiren Rijiju. Despite recent health concernsparticularly knee surgery in the United Statesthe Dalai Lama remains active. In a December interview, he said he could live until 110. Nonetheless, preparations for life after him are well underway. Since 2011, he has stepped back from political leadership, handing that role to a democratically elected Tibetan government-in-exile and ending a 368-year-old tradition of combining spiritual and temporal authority. His spiritual foundation, the Gaden Phodrang, was established in 2015 and includes several senior aides who will play a key role in identifying and recognizing the next Dalai Lama. Tibetan officials stress that this structure is meant to ensure stability and continuity after his passing. Deputy speaker Teykhang noted that the Dalai Lama has consciously prepared his people for a future without him. “Since he has come in the form of a human, we have to agree that there will be a moment when he is not with us,” she said. “He made us act as if he’s not there.” The Dalai Lama’s efforts reflect a broader missionnot only to preserve Tibetan identity, culture, and religionbut also to offer spiritual guidance to humanity. His upcoming remarks are expected to shape global and Tibetan understanding of leadership, continuity, and faith, even as political tensions with China remain high.
