College soccer star and son of former NFL player Milton Stegall dies in dorm room
Chase Stegall, a 20-year-old sophomore midfielder for DePaul University’s men’s soccer team, died unexpectedly in his dorm room on the Lincoln Park campus in Chicago on June 2, 2025. The son of former NFL and CFL star Milton Stegall, Chase was a rising talent from Atlanta, Georgia, who played in 16 of DePaul’s 17 games during the 2024 season. His cause of death has not been disclosed, though he had a history of seizures, as noted in a February essay he wrote for the university.
DePaul President Rob Manuel announced the tragic news, praising Chase for his warmth, strength of character, and vibrant presence. The university’s athletics department, including Vice President DeWayne Peevy and head coach Mark Plotkin, expressed profound grief, highlighting Chase’s role as a cherished teammate and friend. Milton Stegall, Chase’s father, played three NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and 14 seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, earning a 2012 induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
The Blue Bombers organization, through CEO Wade Miller, shared their sorrow, noting Chase’s bright future and offering condolences to Milton, his wife Darlene, and their son Collin, Chase’s brother. Collin posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing, “Miss you already.” The DePaul community and soccer program are mourning the loss of a young man described as exceptional both on and off the field.
