Palestinians to Raise Flag at WHO for the First Time Following Historic Vote

Palestinian delegation successfully secured the right to fly its flag at the World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time, following a vote at the agency’s annual assembly in Geneva. The resolution, supported by China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and other nations, passed with 95 votes in favor, four against (Israel, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Germany), and 27 abstentions.

This decision follows Palestine’s bid for membership in the UN General Assembly last year and comes amid growing international attention to Palestinian statehood, with some countries like France considering recognition of a Palestinian state.

Palestinian representatives expressed hope that this symbolic step will pave the way for greater recognition within UN bodies and lead to full membership in the WHO and other international forums. Currently, Palestine holds observer status at the WHO and has achieved certain recognitions, such as the right to receive outbreak notifications under international health regulations.

The vote reflects ongoing international debate surrounding Palestinian statehood, amidst the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
