On May 20, 2022 – Russo-Ukrainian War: Russia Claims Full Control of Mariupol After Brutal Three-Month Siege

The Siege and the Battle for Mariupol.

The siege of Mariupol was one of the most devastating and symbolically significant chapters of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Beginning in late February 2022, just days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Mariupol quickly became a strategic target due to its location on the Sea of Azov and its role as a key industrial and port city in southeastern Ukraine.

Russian forces, along with fighters from the separatist Donetsk People’s Republic, encircled the city, cutting off access to food, water, electricity, and humanitarian aid. The Ukrainian defenders, primarily composed of the Azov Regiment, marines, and local police, mounted a fierce resistance, often fighting street-to-street and utilizing the city’s urban terrain to their advantage. As Russian bombardments intensified, entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, and civilian casualties mounted rapidly.

Humanitarian Crisis and Symbolism

As the siege dragged on for nearly three months, Mariupol became a symbol of Ukrainian resilience but also of the enormous human suffering caused by the war. Civilians were trapped in bomb shelters, basements, and makeshift bunkers, with little access to food, water, or medical care. The Russian military was accused of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and theaters, notably the Mariupol Drama Theatre where hundreds of civilians were sheltering despite signs indicating the presence of children.

The attack on the theater drew international condemnation and became one of the most horrific incidents of the war. Despite repeated calls from global leaders and humanitarian organizations, efforts to establish safe corridors for evacuation often broke down, and only a fraction of the city's original population was able to escape safely.

Fall of Azovstal and Russian Control

The last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance in Mariupol was the Azovstal steel plant, a sprawling industrial complex with underground tunnels where the remaining Ukrainian fighters and civilians took refuge. For weeks, Russian forces laid siege to Azovstal, launching relentless airstrikes and artillery assaults. The defenders held out under increasingly dire conditions, becoming national heroes in Ukraine and capturing the world’s attention.

Eventually, in May 2022, after negotiations facilitated by international mediators, hundreds of Ukrainian fighters surrendered under the agreement that they would be treated as prisoners of war. On May 20, 2022, Russia claimed full control of Mariupol. The city, almost entirely destroyed, stood as a testament to the war’s brutality, and its fall marked a major strategic and psychological victory for Russia, albeit at an immense human and moral cost.
