(In Kenya) Tundu Lissu Charged with Treason Over Electoral Reform Demand

Tanzanian authorities have charged Tundu Lissu with treason after his arrest for demanding electoral reforms.

His case has drawn sharp regional attention, especially after Kenyan activists, including Boniface Mwangi, were detained for showing support.

The situation worsened when Martha Karua and other Kenyan leaders were barred from entering Tanzania, fuelling diplomatic concern and outrage over political repression in East Africa.

Lissu, a top opposition figure and former presidential candidate, faces severe charges including inciting rebellion and spreading false information.

His defiant stand symbolised by his hunger strike and “No Reforms, No Election” slogan, has made headlines.

Human rights groups and pro-democracy voices have called for his release.

As Tanzania’s October elections approach, his trial is raising questions about democratic freedom and the region's handling of dissent.
