Thousands of Nigerian Graduates Barred from National Youth Service Scheme After JAMB Flags Admissions as Invalid
Thousands of Nigerian university graduates are facing a significant setback as they have been denied mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) flagged their April 2024 admissions as invalid. Reports indicate that approximately 14,000 graduates had their records unexpectedly locked on JAMB's Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) just a week before the mobilization for Batch B Stream 1 was set to begin.
Affected graduates have expressed frustration over the sudden change, with many recounting how their portals began displaying the notice "fake admission," despite having accepted their offers years ago and appearing on the matriculation list. Universities involved in this controversy include Ambrose Alli University, Imo State University, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Calabar, University of Benin, Federal University of Technology Akure, Lagos State University, Kwara State University, and Edo State University, Iyamho.

One affected graduate shared their experience, explaining, "We took the JAMB exam (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination), but our admissions came directly from our school, not JAMB. We have consistently submitted our names for regularisation through our school, but nothing has come of it. When we sought assistance at the state office, the treatment we received was unsatisfactory."
The graduate further elaborated that, despite being directed to their school for regularisation, they encountered obstacles and were informed they needed to pay for the process themselves, which was intended to be a straightforward procedure. Despite successfully completing the regularisation and being added to the JAMB matriculation list, they now find themselves barred from proceeding with their lives as they cannot partake in the NYSC program or further their education.
The graduates are urging JAMB and relevant authorities to resolve the situation and unlock their academic records, allowing them to move forward with their careers.

In response to the situation, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, explained that the issue arises from illegal admissions granted by some institutions. "The admission process requires a candidate to write JAMB, choose an institution, and then be admitted through JAMB," he stated. "If a student is admitted improperly, we cannot issue them an admission letter."
Dr. Benjamin added that JAMB is committed to maintaining admission standards and that the board had previously dealt with similar issues affecting over 250,000 candidates. He stressed that students must meet the application requirements for their programs and that the regularisation process is not automatic.
As the affected students, especially those from Ambrose Alli University, call for urgent intervention from JAMB and the relevant authorities, this situation underscores the significant administrative challenges faced by graduates in navigating the national education and service system in Nigeria. The uncertainty surrounding their futures remains a heavy burden as they seek resolution.
