Hamas Open to Long-Term Truce with Israel but Rejects Disarmament

Hamas is expressing a willingness to consider a long-term truce with Israel, potentially lasting five to seven years, as discussions continue in Cairo regarding a ceasefire. A Hamas official, Taher Al-Nono, indicated that the group is open to serious proposals aimed at ending the conflict, which would also entail rebuilding Gaza and addressing the release of Palestinian prisoners and hostages.

However, Hamas is firm on one key demand: it will not disarm. Al-Nono stated that the group's "weapon of resistance" will remain intact as long as the occupation exists, directly opposing Israel's demand for demilitarization. Israel, seeking an end to hostilities, has downplayed the chances of a breakthrough in negotiations without Hamas agreeing to lay down its arms and release the remaining hostages.

The ongoing conflict escalated after Hamas launched an attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in substantial casualties and the taking of hostages. Since the collapse of a ceasefire in January, Israel has resumed its offensive in Gaza, leading to a humanitarian crisis with significant displacement and civilian casualties reported. As the situation develops, the prospects for a lasting peace remain uncertain.
