Chinese Official Says US Tariff Aims to 'Take Away Hong Kong's Life'
Xia Baolong, a top Chinese official overseeing Hong Kong affairs, condemned the United States' tariff strategy as "extremely shameless," asserting that it aims to "take away Hong Kong's life." As the director of China's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Xia delivered these remarks during a televised speech on Hong Kong's National Security Education Day. He emphasized that bullying tactics would never succeed against the Chinese people, including those from Hong Kong, stating, "Let those peasants in the United States wail in front of the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization." Xia insisted that pressure, threats, and blackmail are not effective means of dealing with China.

His comments followed China's decision to increase tariffs on U.S. imports to 125% in retaliation against U.S. President Donald Trump's earlier move to impose tariffs on Chinese goods, raising them to 145%. This tit-for-tat tariff war underscores a broader trade conflict that has serious implications for global markets. U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s remarks, referring to Americans as borrowing and buying from "Chinese peasants," were met with significant backlash in China. While Hong Kong is subject to U.S. tariffs due to its designation as part of China amid ongoing national security crackdowns, its leader, John Lee, has stated that the region currently does not plan to impose retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. Beijing has dismissed the U.S. tariff strategy as a "joke," indicating the tensions between the two nations continue to escalate.
