The Federal Government: NO NIN NO RICE

The Nigerian government has launched an initiative to sell subsidized rice to citizens, particularly public servants, at a flat rate of N40,000 per 50kg bag. This move aims to alleviate the current food crisis and curb racketeering. To benefit from this program, individuals must have a duly registered National Identification Number (NIN).

Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, has launched the sale of subsidized milled rice in Abuja, with plans to roll out the program nationwide. This initiative aims to alleviate the country's food security challenges, which have been exacerbated by conflict, climate change, inflation, and rising food prices .

The country is facing a severe food crisis, with over 25 million people struggling to access enough food . The conflict in Ukraine has further worsened the situation, causing sharp price increases for wheat and other staple foods . Climate change has also taken a toll, with devastating floods in 2022 killing over 500 people, displacing 1.4 million, and destroying 90,000 homes .

Key Challenges:

- Conflict and Displacement: Armed groups have forced at least 78,000 farmers to abandon their farmland, disrupting food supply chains .

- Climate Change: Rising temperatures, soil erosion, and unpredictable weather patterns have severely impacted agricultural productivity .

- Economic Instability: Inflation has hit a 28-year high, further reducing household purchasing power .

To address these challenges, the government is implementing various initiatives, including:

- Subsidized Rice Program: Providing affordable rice to vulnerable populations .

- Climate-Resilient Farming: Training farmers in climate-smart agriculture practices .

- Cash Assistance: Offering timely financial support to affected families .

Eligibility Criteria:

- National Identification Number (NIN) : Required for verification purposes

- Public Servants : Priority beneficiaries of the subsidized rice program

- One Person, One Bag : Limit to prevent multiple purchases and ensure fairness

How to Purchase:

1. Registration : Ensure you have a valid NIN and phone number

2. Verification : Get verified through the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS) platform

3. Receipt Generation : Receive a code number and Treasury receipt upon successful verification

4. Collection : Pick up your bag of rice at designated centers

This initiative is part of the government's efforts to address food insecurity .
