Reacting to the Mrs Oluremi Tinubu's unveiling of the fabric that has now been termed an "asoebi", many Nigerian social media users have harshly criticized the First Lady's initiative. They wondered if Mrs Tinubu assumed the country was her local town's meeting or women's gathering. They also queried if the First Lady was blind to the current economic situation in a country where people die on a daily basis from poverty and an inability to access basic amenities. Despite the widespread criticism of Mrs Tinubu's latest initiative, some supporters of the idea have termed it a positive development with a capacity to foster national unity at a time where various regions are divided as a result of politicking bias, tribal bigotry and electoral choices.
