Kenyan President Ruto Calls for Self-Reliance in Africa's Healthcare

Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized the need for Africa to take charge of its healthcare sector, urging reduced reliance on foreign aid during the launch of the Program for Investment and Financing in Africa's Health (PIFAH) initiative.

Speaking at the Summit of the Future, President Ruto stressed Africa's historical role in global crises, including the recent pandemic. "We stand at a historic moment as nations gather to reflect on our shared future on this planet," he said.

Ruto emphasized the importance of breaking free from historical constraints. "The Pact signed at the Summit recognizes our collective responsibility to break free from historical constraints and offer hope to the next generation."

He advocated for homegrown financing models to tackle health innovation and food security challenges. "The health of our people, the vitality of our youth, and the very foundations of our societies depend on it."

Ruto criticized traditional multilateral resource mobilization systems as outdated and ineffective. "Our generation's responsibility is to break free from this cycle and create a new path that empowers us to drive our development."

As African Union Champion for Institutional Reform, Ruto pledged to explore investment opportunities in critical social sectors, particularly healthcare. He highlighted partnerships aimed at providing every African with an AI-powered Digital Health Wallet and strengthening local biopharma research and manufacturing capabilities.

However, Ruto stressed the importance of innovative funding strategies for sustainability. "Africa's rise depends on ensuring our continent has access to capital that can build the health infrastructure we need."

Commending AUDA-NEPAD for developing PIFAH, Ruto expressed optimism that other African leaders would share his commitment. "I trust that this gathering will galvanize us to focus on these critical issues and the opportunities that lie ahead for Africa."

The PIFAH initiative aims to unlock significant resources from the private sector, marking a crucial step toward transforming Africa's healthcare landscape.

Ruto's call to action resonated throughout the summit, emphasizing Africa's readiness to take charge of its healthcare future.
