Enzo Zidane Retires at 29 After Struggling to Find Consistency

Enzo Zidane, the eldest son of legendary French footballer Zinedine Zidane, has announced his retirement from professional football at just 29 years old. This decision comes after a challenging career, where he struggled to find consistency and establish himself in the top flight .

Enzo's football journey began in Real Madrid's youth academy, where he showed promise and even scored on his debut for the senior team in a Copa del Rey match against Cultural Leonesa in 2016 . However, he was eventually told to find another team, leading him to join Alaves, followed by stints at Lausanne Sports in Switzerland, Rayo Majadahonda, Desportivo Aves in Portugal, Almeria, and finally Fuenlabrada .

He'd been struggling to find his place in the football world and was unemployed for a season, which took a toll on his motivation .

After his last stint with Fuenlabrada in the Spanish third tier, Enzo decided to hang up his boots and focus on his family and investments . His decision highlights the growing trend of athletes planning for life beyond sports.

Enzo Zidane's football journey became increasingly tumultuous. He struggled to find consistency, bouncing between clubs and facing prolonged periods without playtime.

Key milestones in his journey include:

- 2019-2020: Half-season stints at Desportivo Aves (Portugal) and Almeria, followed by 8 months without a club.

- 2021-2022: Signed with Ligue 2 side Rodez (where his father, Zinedine Zidane, is a shareholder).

- 2022-2023: Joined Fuenlabrada in the Spanish third tier.

This lack of stability hindered his growth and made it difficult for him to establish himself as a reliable playmaker. Despite his efforts, Enzo couldn't replicate the success of his legendary father, Zinedine Zidane.

It's interesting to note that Enzo's retirement comes at a time when his younger brothers, Luca and Elyaz, are still pursuing their football careers . Luca, a 26-year-old goalkeeper, plays for Granada, while Elyaz, an 18-year-old defender, joined Betis' reserve team in January 2024 .

Throughout his career, Enzo made 203 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 24 assists . Despite his efforts, he couldn't quite live up to the expectations that came with being the son of a football legend.

Enzo's retirement announcement follows another young footballer, Romeo Beckham, who also retired at 22 to pursue a career in fashion . It's unclear what's next for Enzo, but he'll likely focus on his family and other investments .
