The Indian Medical Association held a nationwide strike across all hospitals on 17 August 2024, over the brutal rape, assault and murder of Moumita Debnath, a second year postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Moumita's corpse was discovered in seminar hall on the college campus on 9th August 2024, at about 11:30 a.m. after she was reported missing by her colleagues. The trainee doctor's body was discovered in a semi-nude state with her eyes, mouth and genitals bleeding, she was later declared dead.

A four page autopsy which revealed that the trainee doctor had been raped and sexually assaulted before being killed via strangulation, has sparked severe outrage amongst other medical doctors and women in India who have expressed deep worry over the safety of women in India. The outrage over Dr Debnath's murder has in addition to the strike action by the medical association, led to protests by students and women across various colleges in India. According to police investigation, a suspect, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested his Bluetooth headset was discovered at the crime scene.The police claim that Sanjay Roy confessed to the crime despite his mother's insistence that he was being framed.
