Tinubu Reelected ECOWAS Chairman

 President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been reelected for a one year tenure as chairman of The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)Authority of Heads of States and Government. The president whose first tenure is due for expiration on 9th July, was unanimously reelected by fellow Heads of Government at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday 7th July, 2024. In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu said he would focus on consolidating the values of democracy and upholding the interest of the regional body.

The Economic Community of West African States is headquartered in Abuja Nigeria and has 15 member states; eight of these are French-speaking, five are English-speaking, and two Portuguese-speaking. All current members joined the community as founding members in May 1975, except Cape Verde which joined in 1977. ECOWAS also serves as a peacekeeping force in the region, with member states occasionally sending joint military forces to intervene in the bloc's member countries at times of political instability and unrest.
