FG Proposes New Minimum Wage

Following the five day suspension of the strike action organised by The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on 3rd June 2024, in relation to the demand for an increase to the country's minimum wage payment, The Federal Government has increased its offer of a new minimum wage to the sum of 62,000 naira. The newest proposal of an increase to the minimum comes three days after the government held a prolonged meeting with the two unions on Tuesday 4th June 2024.

In a seeming attempt at compromise, The Nigeria Labour Congress has aldo reduced the sum demanded as minimum wage in the country from the initial request of #494,000 naira to #250,000 naira. The government's offer of a 62,000 naira minimum wage follows the submission of a new minimum wage cost implications proposal presented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Minister of Finance, Wale Edun despite protests from The Nigerian Governors Forum on the unsustainability of the initial assurance of a minimum wage not lower than 60,000 naira.
