FG Targets 6000 Megawatts of Electricity Generation by End of 2024 to Boost Power Supply

The Federal Government aims to increase power generation from 4,000 to 6,000 megawatts by the end of 2024, according to the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu.

Speaking to the Senate Committee on Power in Abuja, Adelabu emphasized the need to harness hydro and solar power to boost electricity supply to households and businesses.

Despite having the infrastructure to generate up to 6,000 megawatts, the current maximum output is only 5,800 megawatts due to inadequate maintenance.

Adelabu stressed the importance of investing in the power sector and holding Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) accountable for their performance.

The government plans to restructure DisCos along state lines, potentially franchising them to encourage investment and improve efficiency.

This move marks a shift towards greater government involvement in the power sector, which has been largely managed by the private sector until now.
