Tinubu Imposes Ban on Foreign Trips for Ministers

 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has imposed a three month ban on public funded trips  for ministers of the federation. The ban which is to take effect from 1st April 2024, was announced in a memo signed on 12 March 2024, by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to The President and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. The aim of the temporary ban on international trips for government officials at all levels, is to reduce cost of governance and save funds without compromising government functions.

The memo also directed that any government official who intends to embark on any public funded international trip must henceforth, seek and obtain presidential approval two weeks before said trip. Earlier in January 2024, president Tinubu had  issued an order limiting the number of people who could accompany him on both local and international trips, emphasizing that the members of his delegation should not exceed 25 for local travels and 20 for international trips. The president had also mandated that security agents at his destination should provide protective services instead of being accompanied by many security personnel from Abuja.
