Thieves Disguised as Rescuers Steal 65 Motorcycles in Sokoto Market Fire

The head of the Sokoto State Motorcycles Marketers Association, Garba Muhammed, stated on Tuesday that 65 motorcycles were missing following a fire that engulfed part of the Sokoto central market on Monday.

The fire, believed to have started from a garbage dump, affected an area of the market where motorcycles and bicycles were sold.

During a visit by Governor Ahmed Aliyu shortly after the blaze, Muhammed reported that 21 stores and 41 permanent shops were destroyed, along with 110 temporary shops.

He also mentioned that aside from the fire damage, they lost 65 motorcycles and 10 new engines to thieves posing as rescuers.

Muhammed appealed for financial aid from the state government for the affected vendors, many of whom lost all their merchandise.

In response, Governor Ahmed Aliyu pledged to establish a committee to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage, promising assistance within the government's means.

However, he instructed the market management and community to clear the garbage that sparked the fire within three weeks or face closure.
