Inmates of the  Nigerian Correctional Service located in Jos, Plateau State, on Friday 1st March, protested the prison authorities' plan to reduce their food rations. According to reports, expressing their displeasure with the plan to reduce food rations, the inmates rejected their breakfast as well as failed to comply with the orders given them by custodial officers.

The prisoners further expressed their displeasure at the proposed rationing by converging at the prison yard and singing at the top of their voices until they were forced back into their rooms by the custodial officers via the use of tear gas.

Confirming the fracas that ensued in the correctional facility, Comptroller of the Jos Correctional Service, Raphael Ibinuhi, said the decision to reduce the food ration was prompted by the high cost of living in the country. Mr Ibinuhi also stated that he thought the protests unnecessary as the challenging cost of living is not a problem that solely affects the operations of the correctional service but all Nigerians nationwide.
