A man identified as Nkereuwem Umoren Ekpo, has been arrested by the police for allegedly butchering his 90 year old grandmother named Martina Udoudo Akpan, to death with a machete, leaving deep cuts on her neck and several other parts of her body. Until the time of arrest, Nkereuwem Ekpo, had resided in Adiasim Ikot Udo Village located in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The incident occurred at about 2:00pm on 25th February 2024 with the suspect immediately fleeing the area after taking the sum of 16,750 naira tied to his grandmother's wrapper.

Confirming the murder of the 90 year old woman by her grandson on their farmland, Public Relations Officer of The Akwa Ibom State Police, Odiko Macdon, stated that a rigorous manhunt led to the arrest of the suspect who was paraded alongside 51 others during a press conference on Saturday 16 March, 2024. The police PRO also revealed that Nkereuwem Umoren Ekpo had committed the crime while he had been harvesting cassava stems alongside his grandmother on the family's farmland.
