A unnamed man has fallen to his death from a hot air balloon that was traveling over a residential area of Melbourne, Australia, the country's second-largest city. The hot-air balloon took off from Melbourne’s northern suburbs in the early hours of Monday 18 March and was in the air for about 30 minutes before the man fell off the basket. His body was found in a residential area that Victoria state police closed off to traffic at about 7:30am. The balloon made an emergency landing many miles from where the man’s body was found.

The aircraft from which the man fell out of had been occupied by several others including the pilot. They have been offered counselling after being left "traumatised". Despite the bizarre nature of the accident, local police have stated that the death was not being treated as suspicious. The National Commercial Hot Air Ballooning Industry and the Australian Ballooning Federation expressed joint condolences to the man's family and friends while assuring future users of hot air balloons that these balloon baskets "are designed with safety in mind, specifically to prevent passengers from falling out accidentally or from any accidental exit."
