The Federal Government announced yesterday that the implementation of state police is being hindered by the reluctance of some states.
Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed concern over the slow progress of the National Economic Council's Ad-hoc Committee on State Policing Initiative, noting that the responses from certain governors were lacking.
Despite a resolution made a month ago by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and 36 governors to initiate the state policing model, only 16 states have shown commitment so far.

Shettima, who chairs the National Economic Council, urged the remaining 20 governors to submit their proposals during the next month's meeting.
The decision to pursue state police stems from the rising insecurity, including banditry, kidnappings, and killings, across the country.
Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, reiterated the governors' dedication to this agenda, emphasizing its potential to address security challenges effectively.
The governors also emphasized the importance of constitutional amendments to accommodate state police.
During the 140th NEC meeting held virtually, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, presented a report indicating that the states' responses fell short of expectations.
Shettima expressed dissatisfaction with the delay, urging the remaining states to expedite their actions on the matter.
The communique issued at the end of the meeting stressed the imperative need for state policing as a crucial amendment to the 1999 Constitution to rectify fundamental flaws in the national security structure.
Governor AbdulRazaq also presented a report from NEC's Ad-hoc Committee on Economic Affairs, tasked with developing a viable roadmap to address economic challenges at both national and sub-national levels, aiming to prevent potential economic and socio-political crises.
