Father and Son Drown in Public Well

 A father, son and neighbour have drowned in a public well situated in Oju town of Oju Local Government Area of Benue State. According to witness accounts, the tragic incident which occurred on Saturday 2nd March 2024, claimed the lives of Mr Matthew Ekpengbe, his 15 year old son and good Samaritan neighbour who happened to be a Hausa trader. The now deceased 15 year old had been sent to obtain water from the well by his father who operated a car wash, unfortunately, the boy fell into the well while trying to fill up his container.

Mr Ekpengbe who witnessed his son's fall into the well had instinctively rushed to his son's aid and also called out to his neighbour for help. However the two men who had been trying to rescue the 15 year old, tragically slipped into the well and all three drowned. The trio were immediately buried by their relatives as a result of the distended nature of the corpses after they were brought out of the well. Confirming the incident to the press, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Anene Swuese, said an investigation was ongoing into the incident. In the words of the police PRO: “The incident was reported to the police and we have commenced an investigation into the matter. I cannot give further details now."
