Doctors Charged to Court for Killing Patient

 Two medical doctors identified as Michael Atiba and Michael Ugbeye, have been arraigned before the  Lagos State High Court in Ikeja over the alleged involuntary manslaughter of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi. Atiba, a doctor at the Gbagada Hospital, and Ugbeye, a consultant with the National Orthopaedic Hospital, are facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter brought against them by the Lagos State Government. According to the state prosecutor, A.O Azeez, the duo had on 21st October 2023 at about 12:00pm, caused the death of Ejiro Ugorobi by neglecting the application of anaesthesia before and after surgery. The unlawful actions leading to the patient's demise took place at number 20, Michael Adekoya Street, located in the Ilupeju area of Lagos state.

 After the defendants entered a not guilty plea claiming to be in the business of saving and not taking lives, the judge Justice Oyindamola Ogala, in her ruling, granted the defendants bail in the sum of five million naira each with two sureties each in like sum, who must be resident within the Court’s jurisdiction. She further stated that the sureties must present credible home and office addresses as well as credible financial status and must present their BVN and NIN, evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, and explain their relationship with the defendants. Justice Oyindamola Ogala set the trial date for 15 May 2024 while the defendants remain in custody until bail conditions are met.
