Court Dismisses Lawsuit by Seventh Day Adventist Church Against Exams, Elections on Saturdays

Justice James Kolawole Omotoso of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit brought forth by Ugochukwu Uchenwa, a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Nigeria, which sought to halt the scheduling of elections and examinations on Saturdays in Nigeria.

The court deemed the claim against the Nigerian Government as "frivolous, vexatious, bothersome, and unjustified."

The Seventh Day Adventist Church, citing Saturday as its Sabbath day of worship, argued that holding elections and tests on Saturdays infringed upon its members' fundamental rights.

Consequently, the plaintiff urged the Court to bar the Federal Government from scheduling future elections and examinations on Saturdays to safeguard their right to worship.

However, Justice Omotoso ruled on Wednesday that the church's fundamental rights were not being violated by government policies and that the Seventh Day Adventist Church, being a minority in Nigeria, could not impose its beliefs on the majority of other Christian denominations in the country.

The lawsuit stemmed from the country's electioneering system, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) consistently scheduling elections on Saturdays in Nigeria.
