Tunisian Imam Accused Of Hate Speech Deported By France Government

French authorities have deported a Tunisian imam accused of spreading hatred against women and Jews.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated that Mahjoub Mahjoubi, an imam from Bagnols-sur-Ceze, was sent back to Tunisia within 12 hours of his arrest, highlighting the strength of a recently enacted immigration law.

The law, aimed at tightening migration conditions, is part of the government's response to the far-right's rise, facing opposition from left-wing parties.

Darmanin emphasized the need for firmness against a "radical imam" making unacceptable comments, as cited in the official order detailing Mahjoubi's expulsion, which mentioned his intolerant and violent portrayal of Islam.

Mahjoubi's lawyer intends to appeal the expulsion.

This deportation follows similar actions in the past, aligning with President Emmanuel Macron's goal to limit the presence of foreign imams in France.
