A 26 year old mother identified as Mariah Thomas, has been arrested and charged with endangering an infant's welfare in the first class degree, after she claimed to have mistook a hot oven for her one month old baby's crib. The child named Za'Riah Mae was found dead as a result of being roasted to death in the oven. The police had found the young mother's one month old daughter covered in burns, after they responded to an anonymous report of a child "not breathing". The incident which took place in Kansas city occurred just a day after Mariah's birthday and an explanation is yet to be offered by her on how she mistook a hot oven for a baby's crib. Thomas was transported to police headquarters for an interview where she invoked her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. But she consented to detectives obtaining a blood draw and accessing her phone data.

A friend who chose to remain anonymous told the press that "Mariah had mental issues and didn't have the mindset of an adult". Checks on Mariah's social media accounts portrayed her as a dutiful and doting mother, however, in one of her posts just a few weeks before the tragic death of her daughter, Mariah had ranted that "no one had been looking out for her" despite "mfs" claiming to be her friends.
