A 30 year old Iranian man has shot dead 12 members of his family, in what has now been a considered a rare mass shooting, on Saturday 17th February, 2024. According to local media, the unnamed male killed 12 members of his family including his father and brother, with a Kalashnikov weapon near the town of Faryab, Kerman Province, over a family dispute.

Provincial chief justice Ebrahim Hamidi, revealed to the press that the shooter wass killed during a shootout with security forces while they had been trying to capture him. The gunman whose identity remains unknown to the public, shattered the peace of the region and marked its history with one of the deadliest shootings in decades. Mass shootings are rare in Iran, where people are only allowed to possess hunting rifles. In January 2024, an army conscript opened fire inside a military base in the same province, killing at least five other soldiers before fleeing the scene.
