Reacting to the unfortunate incident which occurred on 26th December 2023, while the victim had been accompanying a visiting friend, the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, expressed dismay during a session at the Jerome Udorji Secretariat in Awka on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. He emphasized that such actions contradict the state’s masquerading laws enacted in 2022. These regulations specify designated areas for masquerade performances during festivals or celebrations, aiming to ensure public safety and enjoyment. The commissioner stressed that masquerading, as a cultural tradition, should provide amusement and not obstruct public movement or result in harm to individuals. He asserted that the murder of Shedrack Okoye constitutes a criminal act for which the culprit must be brought to book, regardless of the duration of the pursuit.
