Madagascar Passes Bill to Castrate Child Rapists

The Republic of Madagascar has passed a bill in favour of the castration of child rapists.  The Madagascar Upper House Senate approved the bill now known as the "castration law" on Wednesday 7th February 2024 a few days after through by the national assembly. The bill, seen by AFP, introduces a penalty of surgical castration for “perpetrators of rape committed on a child under the age of 10”. It allows “chemical or surgical” castration for rapists of children aged between 10 and 13 and chemical castration for rapists of minors aged between 13 and 18.

Defending the new bill despite criticisms from Amnesty International, which declared the castration law "cruel, inhuman and degrading", Madagascar's Justice Minister, Landy Mbolatiana Randriamanantenasoa, stated that the country "had to act" after it faced a resurgence of rape cases and that in the year 2023 alone, Madagascar had recorded 600 rape cases involving minors. The Justice Minister also revealed that before the new castration law was put in place, the minimum prison sentence given to child rapists, was five years.
