A 33 year old male identified as Jan Gholami, has received a prison sentence of 23 years and six months, for the brutal murder of his adopted daughter at their home located in Gravesend, Kent. The now convicted murderer had smashed the head of two year old Zahra Ghulami against the wall, after she fought with his ''favourite son" over ice cream. The two year old who was adopted from Afghanistan by Jan Gholami and his partner before they moved to the UK, was taken to hospital on May 27, 2020 where she was diagnosed with a fractured skull and died two days later. Upon his arrest, Gholami tried to claim to jurors that Zahra had fallen down the stairs while he was at Tesco.

Jurors convicted Gholami of murder in a majority verdict of 10 to two after deliberating for nearly 20 hours at Maidstone Crown Court. Jan Gholami's partner, Roqia Ghulami, was also sentenced to a prison term of two years for child neglect, as she failed to seek help on the child's behalf after Jan's brutal smashing. Jan and Roquia were found guilty of their respective charges on 9 January and received their sentences in the same court on Friday, 16th February 2024.
