Court Orders Reinvestigation of Dele Giwa's Murderers 38 Years Afterwards

 A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, 16 February 2024, ordered the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice to reopen investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators of the murder of journalist and founder of Newswatch Magazine, Dele Giwa, 38 years ago. Delivering judgement, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, stated the AGF was under obligation to prosecute and penalize killers of media practitioners in the country. The judge further compelled the Federal Government to ensure adequate protection and safety of the lives of journalists as enshrined in sections 33, 39 of the Constitution and Articles 4 and 9 of the African Charters on Human and Peoples Rights.

Mr Dele Giwa was murdered on 19 October 1986, via a letter bomb which he received in his office. The renowned journalist and publisher who was 39 years old at the time of his assassination, gained the attention of the military government of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, for his constant criticism of the administration. Dele Giwa's 1986 assassination occurred two days after he had been interviewed by operatives of State Security Service (SSS).
