A Veterinary Technologist and the caretaker of the Zoological garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, has lost his life after being mauled by a lion.
The University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a press release said the unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, 19th February, 2024.
Olawuyi was attacked by a 9-year-old male lion while he was feeding the animals within their enclosure at the Zoological garden.
Despite the efforts of other staff members present at the scene, to save him, the attack proved fatal, resulting in severe injuries to Mr. Olawuyi.
The University’s management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, upon receipt of the unfortunate incident, immediately halted ongoing activities to acess the situation firsthand.
Olawuyi was said to have died despite all medical efforts by doctors to save him, as confirmed by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji.
Olawuyi was said to have been responsible for the care of the lions since their birth on campus approximately nine years ago.
OAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to determine both its immediate and underlying causes.
The aggressive lion responsible for the attack has been euthanized by the schi authorities.
