The respective military government of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, have unanimously announced their decision to withdraw their membership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with immediate effect. In a joint statement issued on Sunday 28th January 2024, leaders of the three West African nations declared that it was a “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States “without delay".

It will be recalled that in 2023, the three countries were sanctioned by ECOWAS for carrying out respective coups d'etat and overthrowing the democratically elected government in favour of military rule. The current military leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have in turn, accused ECOWAS of becoming a threat to member states and their population. The three countries further accused the regional organisation(ECOWAS) of failing to support their fight against "terrorism and security".
