An Imam of a mosque in Newark New Jersey, USA, identified as Hassan Sharif, was on Wednesday 3rd January, shot dead outside the mosque. Following the shooting which took place at about 6:00am, just after the first prayer of the day, the clergyman was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. The authorities have stated that there is no evidence the crime was motivated by bias or related to terrorism.

Imam Hassan Sharif was before his fatal shooting, a frequent protester against gun violence. New Jersey's AttorneyGeneral, Matt Plankin, while addressing the press, assured that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to justice. Unconfirmed reports also state that the eventual assassination of Imam Sharif, was a second time a gun had been pulled at the cleric, as the first incident occurred months before and the Imam had managed to wrestle the gun from the unknown assailant who immediately fled the scene.
