Paramount ruler of the Idoma nation, The Och'Idoma, His Royal Majesty Elaigwu John, has in a New Year's message to his subjects, declared a unified sum of fifty thousand naira as traditional bride price payment for all intending brides from the tribe. The traditional ruler also declared a ban on expensive funerals in Idomaland. According to a press release on Wednesday, January 3, 2023, by the Chief Palace Scribe, Onuminya Odoba, the monarch was out to reform “some self-imposed, barbaric, and harsh cultural practices” that make life difficult for the people.

The Och' Idoma was before his ascension to the throne in 2021, a resident pastor at The Deeper Life Bible Church, headed by general overseer, Pastor W.F Kumuyi. In addition to the ban on expensive funerals and bride price reform, the traditional ruler prohibited “the practice of depriving the children and wife or wives of the deceased from inheriting his property.”
