Nigeria's only Nobel laureate, playwright, academic and novelist Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, better known as Wole Soyinka, has declared that barbarians have taken over social media in Nigeria. The renowned poet who made this assertion while speaking at a function in Ogun state, compared the manner in which social media is used Nigeria with its usage in other climes and came to the conclusion that Nigeria falls short in every aspect of social media interaction.

The Nobel Laureate emphasized his distaste for what social media has become in the country by revealing that he "doesn't deal in social media". In Professor Whole Soyinka's words: "I don’t deal in social media. As far as I’m concerned, barbarians have taken over social media and they have swapped the intellectual quotient which used to make and still make social media valid in other societies. Here in this country, social media has been dragged down to the lowest common denominator. However, I believe in the community of the intellect of minds and creativity to rescue us from the monstrosity that social media has become (in this country).”
