Following the massive discovery of various counterfeit products across the country and tweets eulogising deceased former NAFDAC director-general Professor Dora Akunyili, her son, Edozie John Akunyili, has taken to his Tweeter account to lament how Nigeria caused he and his siblings to lose both parents. It will be recalled that his father, Dr Chike Akunyili, was assassinated by unknown assailants On 28 September 2021, on his way back from an event to honour his late wife at Sharon Hall, All Saints Cathedral, Onitsha, and organized by the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA). The Federal Government of Nigeria insistently claimed that the separatist group, The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was responsible for Dr Chike Akunyili's gruesome assassination.

Mourning the loss of his parents, Edozie John Akunyili revealed that his mother who passed away in June 2014, died because she had been so engrossed in her job as NAFDAC DG that she delayed her fibroid hysterectomy for years. The untreated fibroids led to uterine cancer which eventually caused Professor Dora Akunyili's death. Her son further lamented that the lies, corruption and dirty politics still prevalent in Nigeria's system leads him to believe that he lost his mother for nothing.
